Jess McMahon, MCP Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC)

Welcome to ARC, and the beginning of your healing journey! My name is Jess and I’m a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC) in good standing with the British Columbia Association of Clinical Counsellors (BCACC). I hold a Masters in Counselling Psychology (MCP) from Adler University and a Bachelor of Arts (BA) from Simon Fraser University.

Originally from the Gulf Islands, I grew up in a small community that allowed me to recognize the value of connection as a pathway to healing. Vancouver has now been home for over a decade, and I have loved exploring the mountains, beaches, bike paths and various beautiful neighbourhoods that this city has to offer. Throughout my career I have had the privilege of working with individuals from all walks of life, through different transitions, traumas, and transformations.

My therapeutic experiences have taught me that each of us has a unique story to tell, and that this story is often shaped by our relationships to others, the world, and ourselves. My goal is to provide a safe and non-judgemental space for you to feel comfortable in sharing your story with me.

During the course of therapy I will work with you to bring about new awareness and insight. We will externalize your problems, challenge beliefs that have negatively shaped your story, and explore and uncover your strengths. I will help empower you to overcome current life barriers so that you can engage in your preferred narrative.

Although I work mostly from a Person-Centered and Narrative approach, I often integrate other therapeutic modalities (such as Solution-Focused Therapy and Adlerian Therapy) to meet your individual therapeutic needs.

Issues I am experienced in working with include:

  • Anxiety, Stress, and Panic
  • Depression
  • Trauma
  • Grief and Loss
  • Self-Esteem Issues
  • Relationship Issues
  • Life Transitions

Additionally, I enjoy working with couples to help untangle negative patterns in relationships in order to engage in healthier communication and behaviors. Couples can often get stuck in the same cycles—it can be helpful to have an unbiased, third person to deconstruct these cycles, deepen emotional experience, and create new awareness and opportunities to more fully engage with each other. I work with couples using Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and the Gottman Method.

If you have any questions or would like to work with me, I can be reached via the form below. I look forward to hearing your story, and to helping you with your journey towards healing and growth.
