Welcome to ARC! My name is Hala – I’m a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC) in good standing with the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors (BCACC). I hold a Master’s Degree in Counselling Psychology (MCP) from Adler University, and a BA in Psychology from York University in Toronto.
Sometimes when life happens, the idea of inner strength (also known as resilience), can feel distant, or maybe even daunting. In my personal experiences, I have sometimes found it difficult to tune into my own resilience, and have had to really work towards nourishing this part of myself. Having said that, I have found that through a safe space and strong therapeutic connection, one’s inner resilience can shine, and immense healing can occur.
Before settling in Vancouver, I had the privilege of living and studying in various parts of the world. My younger years were spent in the Emirates, and this granted me the opportunity to immerse myself in a culture that really values a strong sense of community. To pursue my post-secondary education I moved to Toronto, and then I relocated again to Vancouver to pursue my graduate training. These experiences taught me how to adapt to new and contrasting environments, and also fostered a deep respect and love, for diverse cultural perspectives.
When it comes to therapy, I recognize that there is no “one” approach that is effective for everyone. My personal experiences as a client have also taught me that engaging in therapy takes a great deal of courage and trust. I know that no progress can be made unless you feel completely heard and understood by me, free of any judgment. My commitment to you as my client is to make every effort to build that sense of safety for you, and walk alongside you in a way that is meaningful and helpful. To aid me in doing this I draw on a variety of approaches, predominantly Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT) and Person-Centered Therapy, as well as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Narrative Therapy.
In terms of focus, I enjoy seeing both adults and children, and I have experience working with a variety of populations including refugees and inmates. I am also particularly passionate about supporting couples, and I regularly utilize the Gottman Method as well as Sue Johnson’s Emotionally Focused Couple’s Therapy.
